Vāta is the element of air and movement, and is considered the most powerful dosha. It is characterized as dry, cold, rough and light, and is related to the nervous system. Vāta occupies the lower part of the body - the large intestine being the main location.
Pitta is located in the middle part of the body. It is responsible not only for digestion and metabolism but also for intelligence and understanding. Pitta is connected to the circulatory system and, as such, contributes to one's colour and complexion.
Kapha is associated with the chest, neck, and head. It is a dense, cold and soft dosha that lubricates and gives stabilty and compactness to joints. The power of digestion will be slow and sluggish in an individual with a Kapha constitution or when there is an aggravation of Kapha.
